make gold your winning beauty look

Today on The Marilyn Denis Show, I tackled not only the oft-intimidating topic of gold makeup, but gold makeup itself — on my own eyelids. To many, gold makeup can feel scary — like you’re going to look space-age, not sexy or sophisticated or sassy and especially not subtle. But this season’s gold products are actually really subtle. So it’s really hard to overdo it unless you apply it in the dark — and use the entire tube, pot or jar.

And if you’re still not into it, there’s always gold nail polish (hidden perk: the sparkles make it more durable so it’s less prone to chip) — or just a few gold accessories? I’ve always been a white gold/silver girl, and I thought you had to be one or the other. But this season, I’ve been mixing in a bit of yellow gold. I’m such a daredevil, but it’s opened up a whole new world of accessorizing.

The full rundown of products featured on the segment & where to get them are listed on my blog on The Kit.

What I wore & where to buy it:

Dress: Zara
Belt: Forever21
Gold tights: Calvin Klein
Shoes: Vintage
Necklace, earrings, cuff bracelet: The Bay
Hair: Sun at Concepts Salon + Spa
Nails: Tips Nail Bar

you don’t need botox. you just need the right haircut for your face shape.

Are you round, long, angular or heart-shaped? It makes a difference, you know. That is, when it comes to your face. Because knowing your face shape is the key to getting a good hairstyle. Ignore your face shape and you’ll end up with a haircut that is lovely, but not lovely on you.

Over at www.lifeandbeautyweekly.ca, I give my tips on how to choose the right haircut for your face shape. I should listen to myself, actually.

Accepting that certain hairstyles suit your face shape is as relevant as accepting that certain clothing styles (empire waist, skinny jeans, cap sleeves) suit certain body types — and not others. Sometimes it can feel as depressing as thinking about a world without chocolate, but it’s not that bad. And once you start getting the right style for your face shape, you’ll be surprised how much better you look. Younger. Thinner. More well-rested. Lovelier.

(Yes, you still have to wash your face before bed.)

i removed my eye makeup with a facial cleanser. oh yes, i did.

I don’t read instruction manuals. Mostly because I have little patience, but more so because I love the mystery of whether I’ll be able to figure it out myself. Maybe I won’t and I’ll get frustrated. But if I do, I will feel like Nancy Drew reincarnated in all her blue Mustang convertible glory.

Along the same lines, I only read the backs of beauty products when I’m actually using them. Like a leave-in conditioner while I’m in the shower, waiting for it to do its magic (or to find out just how long I need to leave it on.) This occasionally results in the discovery that I’m using the product in entirely the wrong way. But other times I learn something I never would’ve expected. This happened last night, while in the bath. I was testing out Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple Facial One-Step Facial Cleanser.

To be totally honest, I was using it as bubble bath because that’s what I actually thought it was, until…well, until I read the label. After I was soaking in the tub. (Guess it’s not only the backs of labels I don’t read).

FYI, it makes a great bubble bath substitute (as it should! doesn’t this bottle look like bubble bath?). But you know what else it does?

Removes your eye makeup. (Pause for effect)

Oh yes.

It removes your eye makeup.

How many facial cleansers would you even consider using to remove your eye makeup? Girls, you know what I’m talking about. I can’t think of a single other one. Because usually, if it’s good enough to cleanse your pores and leave you glowy and lovely, it’s strong enough to make you scream bloody blindness if you get it in your eye.

I wasn’t really sure I could believe the words I was reading. But because I was wearing heavier black gel liner from being out at The Kit Xmas Cocktail Party, I decided to put it to the test. I applied the facial cleanser to a face cloth and then applied it directly to my eyelids.

And it worked. With one swipe my makeup was gone. And I’m not blind.

Officially my new favourite eye makeup remover.

And bubble bath.

Oh, and it’s a good facial cleanser, too.

PS Beautymark.ca has this Purity Made Simple mini ornament that I featured on The Marilyn Denis Show recently.  Adorable.

sisterhood of the travelling hair

I’m not going to lie. I had a brief moment where I was sure I was going to open this package that arrived in the mail today to find a lock of hair and some sort of chain letter instructing me to send a lock of my own hair to the name at the top of the list.

I get about a dozen PR packages a day, so it takes a lot to get my full attention (I usually open the mail while I’m on the phone or reading emails). This one from Marc Anthony succeeded, with its smart marketing campaign based around how to have good hair when you’re travelling to various climates. It not only got my attention, but also made me want to plan my next vacation to somewhere warm and sunny, very soon.
