New Year’s Beauty Resolutions (you’ll want to keep)

Well, we’re exactly two weeks into the new year. You know what that means. You’re feeling bad about your resolutions. You haven’t been to the gym in days, your desk is a mess, you’ve had three cups of coffee and it’s only 9 am. Maybe you’ve even forgotten what your resolutions were.

Don’t feel bad about yourself. It’s wasted energy.  Those were typical resolutions and you don’t want to be like everyone else, do you?

Yesterday on The Marilyn Denis Show I featured 8 beauty resolutions that are easy to stick to, products that are fun to use, and results that will make you feel good about yourself. And who doesn’t want to feel good about themselves, even on a bad day?

Don’t have time to watch how the products work because one of your resolutions was to stop spending so much time on your computer? Skip it and get the list of products & where to buy them below the video.

PS Now go look in the mirror and pay yourself one nice compliment. You deserve it.

What if your hair elastic was a bracelet?

Sometimes, it just so happens that you find yourself thinking you’re wearing a hair elastic around your wrist, but then, you glance down, and realize, it is an elastic. You know what I’m talking about, girls. At first, you were embarrassed. But then, over time, you started to think, hey, this is really convenient. I always know where to find my hair elastic! I don’t have to dig to the bottom of my handbag or root around in my desk drawer for one (or worse yet, use a rubber band to tie my hair back)! And before you know it, you’re slipping that hair elastic over your wrist every morning as though it’s your new best friend.

It is not your new best friend.

Please, say it with me: a hair elastic is not a bracelet.

Oh, but what if it could be? Oh yes, thank you Goody. You read our minds and created these ingenious inventions: The Goody Double Wear Elastics.

The best part about these elastics is that they are just as functional as they are fashionable. I have a lot of hair, so most elastics tend to snap off in a second. Not these babies. In true Goody form, they’re seamless and ouchless and they stay put.

And don’t you just love how pretty they look all stacked like this? That’s really the key. These gems come in 2-packs, but please don’t just wear two on your wrist. And for the love of ponytails, do not wear one. (Although one of these is 10x better than one boring black elastic.) But really, if you’re going to turn your hair elastics into jewellery, you’ve got to commit. Buy a whole bunch and stack ‘em up.  Then when you need one, you’ll have an endless supply — one for your hair and a bunch still on your wrist. Your hair will thank you. And so will all your friends, when you’re their new go-to girl for hair supplies.

Goody Double Wear Hair Elastics are available now at Loblaws, WalMart, Jean Coutu & London Drugs.

this is how you get Kate Middleton’s perfect wavy hair.

We’re celebrating our BFF Kate’s 30th birthday over at The Kit this week with daily content so you can single-white-female her, from her handbags to her hair. That’s my territory, and I’m sharing the secret on how to get her pretty waves, even if you don’t have wavy hair.

All you need is a sock.

It’s not pretty, but vanity never really is.

And we’re sure the princess is following this regime every night before she tucks into bed beside her prince.

hair obsession of the day: the tin that’s filled with pins

A tin to keep your pins. Brilliant, right? Because the thing about hair pins is, they’re always going missing.

But this is no ordinary kit.

The Bumble and bumble pin tin comes with 50 pins in four different sizes, all in lovely winter white. Why white? Why not, really. At first thought, ideal for your upcoming wedding, or if you’re sporting platinum blonde hair like Gwen S. But I like them as a simple statement piece, when you pin a few in a row.

The little retro instruction guide tells you where to use each pin, and how.

That’s an instruction manual I enjoyed reading. Hurry, these little pin tins are limited-edition and already sold out at Sephora online (though you may find it in stores), but Fruugo still has a few in stock. $15, plus shipping.

Happy pinning.

the best hair products of 2011 (& one that isn’t)

I love a good end-of-year list, so over at The Kit today, I rounded up 2011 with a best-of list of hair products. After 365 days of tryouts, these are the top 10 products that secured their spots in the starting lineup going into 2012.

Making this hair list made think of other things that made an impact on me this year. I could get sentimental, but instead, I give you something systematic! Like the matching lavender velvet ultra-slim hangers now hanging in my closet. Such a simple invention, but I never realized what I was missing until my girlfriends recently witnessed my closet and told me they were shocked that I didn’t own matching velvet hangers.

I never thought hangers were a big deal. So what if mine didn’t match? But a few days later, when I picked myself up a few packs and reorganized my closet, I saw the light. It’s quite incredible just how completely satisfying it is to have such order in a small space, but more importantly, because of the velvet and the little nooks in each hanger, nothing slips. For once, my dresses are staying put.  It’s a nice — organized! — way to start the day.

You know who could use these hangers? Jonathan Ames, judging by his article, “The Mess I’m in” in The Times. Maybe not in lavender, though. I quite enjoyed his article, if not his apartment. But one wouldn’t be interesting, without the other. I forgot how much I like his writing. He’s really funny.
